Scholarships
Gumbo Limbo Coastal Stewards offer several unique scholarship opportunities. These scholarships are named in honor of esteemed individuals who served indispensable roles In our shared history with the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.
The Gordon J. Gilbert merit-based scholarship awards $10,000 scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue their education in a marine-related major that ties into our mission of conservation over the course of a four year education. One student is selected annually for this award.
The scholarship is named for one of the founders of the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Gordon Gilbert, a former science teacher at Boca High and one of the indispensable persons who made the preservation of the coastal hammock a possibility.
Don Stone Scholarship
The Don Stone Scholarship is a competitive need-based scholarship that awards one high school recipient annually. Each recipient is awarded $12K in educational support over the course of four years. The Don Stone Scholarship supports students from Palm Beach or Broward County who wish to study or research preserving coastal waters and lands.
The scholarship is named for “friend of the sea and science teacher extraordinaire” Don Stone, who went from protecting the USA as one of the first Navy Seals, to teaching next generations at A.D. Henderson University School and PBCC, to preserve land and sea around Boca Raton as chairman of the city’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands Management Committee and long-term member of its Marine Advisory Board.
Our goal is to help future marine and environmental leaders by guaranteeing them continued financial support across their academic tenure and honoring the legacy of a man who spent his life protecting the environment and inspiring people around him.
Robyn Morigerato Sea Turtle Stewardship Fellows
The Robyn Morigerato Sea Turtle Stewardship Fellows recognizing current and past women who have made an impact in the Sea Turtle Rehab program at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Following Robyn’s distinguished commitment to our cause, qualifying recipients can receive up to $5000 towards their educational pursuits.
Selection of recipients of these scholarships will be made by the Scholarship Committee of Friends of Gumbo Limbo. All applicants who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply for all scholarships for which they feel they are eligible. The selection committee will evaluate the credentials of each applicant in making the award decisions, and their decision is final.
