Ongoing Volunteer Positions

Volunteer Requirements:

All Volunteers Must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Commit to working at least one 4-hour shift a week for a minimum of 6 months
  • If accepted, attend a new volunteer orientation. Orientations are offered 1-2 times a month

  • Complete a level 2 background check
  • If accepted, you will be invited to attend a new volunteer orientation and training session. Orientations are held 1-2 times a month.

Volunteer Positions:


Welcome Center Volunteer- Work at the Gumbo Limbo front desk and throughout the nature center lobby, greeting visitors, answering questions, and providing information about the center.

Aquarium Guide- Be an environmental educator. Learn and teach about the habitats and species we have at Gumbo Limbo. Interact with visitors from all over the world and educate about the marine aquariums and coastal conservation.

School Program/ Camp Assistant- Help Gumbo Limbo's education team lead field trips and summer camp programs. Set up and help run craft projects, science experiments. Assist staff during lessons and guided tours.

Green Thumb- Gardening. Work in the butterfly garden, and throughout the Gumbo Limbo grounds. Help keep paths clear and maintained. Plant, water, and prune plants.

Special Events Assistant- Attend and assist at one of the many events occurring at Gumbo Limbo throughout the year (i.e Halloween in the Garden, World Oceans Day, Sea Turtle Day Festival). Responsibilities vary.

Luna- Be our Sea Turtle ambassador! Wear the "Luna" Green sea turtle costume; interact and take pictures with visitors at special events.


Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Educator- Work in the sea turtle rehab facility educating visitors about sea turtles, Gumbo Limbo's Sea Turtle patients, and medical treatments.

Evening Sea Turtle Programs- Assist Marine Turtle Specialists with crowd control and answering questions at night time sea turtle hatchling releases or turtle walk programs.

Naturalist Guide- Give guided tours through our butterfly garden and Ashley trail.



Aquarist Assistant - Prepare food for aquariums, take water quality measurements, feed all aquariums, and give a daily presentation about aquariums to guests.

Animal Husbandry - Assist in the care and feeding of the center’s terrestrial animals including snakes, box turtles and gopher tortoises (does not include sea turtles).
