Ongoing Volunteer Positions

Volunteer Requirements:

All Volunteers Must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Commit to working at least one 4-hour shift a week for a minimum of six months
  • If accepted, attend a new volunteer orientation. Orientations are offered 1-2 times a month
  • Submit a $35 fee, due first day of volunteer service. Fee includes the cost of one volunteer shirt, name badge, and training material

Volunteer Positions:

Welcome Center Volunteer- Work at the Gumbo Limbo front desk and throughout the nature center lobby, greeting visitors and educating about the main nature center exhibits.

Aquarium Guide (additional training provided)- Be an environmental educator. Learn and teach about the habitats and species we have at Gumbo Limbo. Interact with visitors from all over the world and educate about the marine aquariums and coastal conservation.

School Program Assistant- Help Gumbo Limbo's education team lead fieldtrips and summer camp programs. Set up and help run craft projects, science experiments, lessons and guided tours.

Green Thumb- Gardening. Work in the butterfly garden, on the Ashley trail, and along the boardwalk. Keep paths clear and maintained. Plant, water, and prune plants.

Special Events Assistant- Attend and assist at one of the many events occurring at Gumbo Limbo throughout the year (i.e Halloween in the Garden, World Oceans Day, Sea Turtle Day Festival). Responsibilities vary.

Luna- Be our Sea Turtle ambassador! Wear the "Luna" Green sea turtle costume; interact and take pictures with visitors at special events.

Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Educator (Requirements: 50 hours as GLNC volunteer OR equivalant work experience AND additional training)- Work in the sea turtle  rehab facility educating visitors about sea turtles, Gumbo Limbo's Sea Turtle patients, and medical treatments.

Evening Sea Turtle Programs (Requirement: 20 hours as GLNC volunteer)- Assist Marine Turtle Specialists with crowd control and answering questions at night time sea turtle hatchling releases or turtle walk programs.

Aquarist Assistant (Requirements: Experience in the Aquarium Guide assignment, additional application process and training)- Prep food for aquariums and give a daily presentation about aquariums to guests.

Animal Husbandry (Requirements: 50 hours as GLNC volunteer OR equivalant work experience, additional application process, training)- Assist in the care and feeding of the center’s terrestrial animals including snakes, box turtles and gopher tortoises (does not include sea turtles).

Naturalist Guide (Requirements: Additional training)- Give guided tours through our butterfly garden and Ashley trail.
