All About STEAMing through September!

How It Works

Explore some of the City of Boca Raton’s amazing exhibits, programs and places, learn something cool, and win prizes in the process!

  • Get your “STEAM through September” passport at any of the participating locations
  • Complete one challenge in each of the (S)cience, (T)echnology, (E)ngineering, (A)rt, and (M)ath categories to earn a stamp
  • Some programs require pre-registration and/ or fees. Check the locations website for more details
  • Collect all five stamps to win a prize!  Prizes may be claimed at any of the participating locations, but must be collected by Friday, October 13, 2017.

 

Science

Gumbo Limbo Nature CenterLittle Wonders  and Nature Detectives – These monthly courses explore the amazing natural world in our own backyard! Find a new lesson and activity each month at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center! Pre-registration required, $5 Members /$7 Non-members per child. Classes held September 2, ages 3-4 (Little Wonders) at 10:00 am, and ages 5-7 (Nature Detectives) at 11:30 am.

Children Science Explorium - Explorium Science Squad: Ooey Gooey Science – Here’s your chance to explore more as we spend an hour experimenting together. Join us at the Children’s Science Explorium as we stir, squish and stretch our way through a fun, hands on chemistry lesson.  Tuesday September 5 at 4pm for Ages 5-6 (with parent/guardian) and Wednesday September 6 at 4pm for ages 7-9. Cost is $10 for residents and $12.50 for non-residents.

Children Science Explorium - Science Challenge – Available all month long at the Children’s Science Explorium, ask a staff member to take the Science Challenge! Explore the exhibits to find clues and answers. Win a prize and earn a stamp!  FREE activity.

Technology

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center - Renewable Energy Lab – Tackle some of the biggest questions facing the planet today, in this open-ended energy laboratory at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Families are invited to drop in, experiment, measure and work together to learn more about the many ways we can power the future. Saturday, September 23, from 11am to 1pm.

Downtown Library - Makers Fair – Come join our team of inventors as we work together to make something new and amazing each month! Little Makers (ages 6-8) will practice their programming on a Cubetto wooden robot on September 13 at 3:30 pm. Youth Makers will take on the Ozobot challenge on September 14 at 6:00 pm. Pre-registration required. FREE program.

Spanish River Library - Coding Classes – Tap into the language of technology at one of the many coding classes offered through the Spanish River Library. Classes are available at beginner and intermediate levels and all FREE of charge. Check out the programs page of the Spanish River Library website for dates and times. Pre-registration required.

Engineering

Gumbo Limbo Nature CenterEco Craft Lab: Underwater Viewers – The whole family is invited to explore under the sea, and participate in this drop-in crafting session at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Learn how to build your very own bathyscope (underwater viewer). Open to all ages, September 30, from 11am to 1pm.

Spanish River Library - Little Makers: Squishy Circuits – Children will have fun with playdough in this activity with a twist of science.  This class will allow kids to explore how circuits work with LED lights and playdough. Join us at the Spanish River Library on Thursday, September 7 at 3:30 pm. For children ages 6 to 8. Pre-registration required. FREE program.

Children Science Explorium - Friday Night at the Museum – Explore the Children’s Science Explorium after hours, eat pizza, watching Wreck it Ralph, and test your engineering skills by creating your own Rube Goldberg Machine. Friday September 15 from 6-9:30pm for ages 7-12. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents ($7 discount for each additional child in the same household)

Art

Children Science Explorium - Make and Take: pH Painting – Join the Children’s Science Explorium for an opportunity to combine the arts and sciences to make your own unique work of art. Sunday, September 3rd from 11:30am-12:30pm. Cost is $5 per craft. (Supplies are limited)

Spanish River Library - Art and the Outdoors – Come to Spanish River Library to learn how to start and maintain your own nature journal.  Spend some time in Pondhawk Natural Area, then practice using different techniques to record what you see. Saturday, September 2, from 11:00 am to noon. Ages 5 and up.

Downtown Library - Art Gallery Challenge – Talk to a staff member at the Youth Services desk at either the Downtown or Spanish River Library branch for an Art Gallery Challenge! Explore the art gallery, looking for clues and answers. Complete the challenge to earn your stamp. Available for the month of September. FREE activity.

Math

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center - Sea Turtle Biology Challenge – Find the Activity Kiosk in Gumbo Limbo Nature Center’s Sea turtle Rehabilitation Facility, and try your hand as a marine veterinarian. Explore the Facility, meet our sea turtle patients, take measurements and solve all the problems to earn a stamp! Available throughout the month of September. FREE activity.

Children Science Explorium - Eyes to the Skies – Join the Explorium team as they explore the night sky using their professional-grade 16-inch Meade LX Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, or in case of poor weather, in their inflatable planetarium. Drop in to learn about the night sky and how to navigate using the stars! Friday, September 8 starting at 8pm. FREE drop-in program.

Spanish River Library - Library Scavenger Hunt - Challenge yourself with this scavenger hunt where you will sharpen your math skills while also learning your way around the the Libraries! Ask a staff member at the Youth Services desk for this challenge, available throughout the month of September. FREE activity.
