The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility (STRF) at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center (GLNC) has many community partners that assist with the needs of our injured sea turtle patients. Recently, staff from the STRF brought four protected sea turtles to the South Florida Wildlife Center (SFWC) in Fort Lauderdale for x-rays, which were generously donated by the SFWC. The two green, one loggerhead, and one hawksbill sea turtles were all previously admitted to GLNC with various injuries and/or ailments such as fish hook and plastic ingestion.
Though the turtles were not excited about the trip, the x-rays were critical to diagnose and determine the progress of their rehabilitation. Annually, the STRF admits approximately 60 sick and injured sea turtles, with the goal of rehabilitating and releasing back to the wild as soon as they make a full recovery. Staff at SFWC welcomed the opportunity to work on an animal that they do not normally see, while GLNC staff was equally impressed with the hard work and dedication that SFWC puts into each and every animal that it treats. GLNC would like to sincerely thank SFWC for their assistance with helping our sea turtle friends!
