Family Programs

Please click on a program title below for additional information, including age restrictions, fees, and registration information.  Please also click on "Family Programs" for additional programs appropriate for children. Please be aware that for most programs, an adult must participate with children and teens under the age of 18.  Specifically, an adult must sign-up, attend, and pay the program fee. Please read the registration information for each individual program.  Some programs require pre-payment, other programs accept pre-payment but will accept walk-ins if there are openings. Programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. Payment may be made by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. There are no refunds unless a class has been cancelled by Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.

Beach Treasures

Limpets & topsnails are a few of the shells you can find on Florida’s beaches. Meet at the Center to learn about seashells and the animals that make them. Caravan to Red Reef Beach Park and search for ocean treasures. All ages. An adult must sign up and participate with child. Cost per person: Member $5 Non-member $8

Mangrove Paddle

Experienced canoers, learn about Florida’s rare mangrove ecosystem on a naturalist guided tour on the boardwalk at Rutherford Park, followed by a paddle through the mangrove trails and along the shoreline of the Intracoastal. You will be delighted as you explore this little slice of wilderness within a city park.

Wetlands & Wildlife

Wakodahatchee is a man-made wetland which has become a favorite for birders and photographers. Bring your binoculars and join us for a ¾ mile guided boardwalk tour to learn more about Florida’s wetland ecosystems. Meet at the boardwalk’s entrance (call for directions). Ages 7-adult. An adult must sign up and participate with children. Cost: No Fee Reservations required at least 3 days in advance (561) 338-1542.

Green Turtle Gallop & Turtle Trot

Location: Spanish River Park
Now is the time to start training for the Green Turtle Gallop! The main event is the timed 10K (6.2 mile) run/walk, which travels along A1A and the Intracoastal neighborhoods, finishing inside Spanish River Park. Top athletes of the various age categories will receive awards. Over 550 people participated in previous years’ events, so get your running or walking gear ready early and get that group of friends together to have a great time this year. You can use the novice training program found at http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51122/10K-Novice-Training to ensure that you’re prepared.

The Great American Clean-Up

Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. is coordinating efforts in Palm Beach County and will provide supplies. Community service hours awarded. Groups Welcome. Space is limited.

Seining the Lagoon

Explore the grasses and flats of the Intracoastal Waterway behind Gumbo Limbo. Hand-held dip nets and large seine nets allow us to catch and release a variety of fish, shrimp, crabs, and other marine life. Ages 10-adult. An adult must sign up and participate with children. Passport to the Past

Please join the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and the Florida Public Archaeology Network for an exploration into Palm Beach County’s rich cultural past. Lectures, kids’ activities, nature walks, interactive exhibits and more will be featured.

Hammock Trails

Join us for a guided walk on our quarter-mile long boardwalk. Explore this rare remnant of coastal hardwood hammock, and get a glimpse of the past. All ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cost per person: No Fee No reservations required. Meet at the boardwalk entrance. "Hammock Trails" is also offered on Wednesdays at 10 AM.
