Date: December 4, 2011
One of the ways Gumbo Limbo Nature Center promotes the message of healthy beaches and other coastal ecosystems is by awarding scholarships to high school and graduate students committed to academic fields preparing them for careers related to our mission. The Gordon Gilbert Scholarships are awarded based on the student’s academic curriculum and grades, volunteer activities at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center or other volunteer and extracurricular activities related to coastal conservation, an essay describing the student’s contributions so far and future plans, and an interview with the scholarship committee. The graduate candidates also present a summary of their research to the committee and commit to an additional public presentation for a more general audience. The announcements and applications for the 2012 scholarships are posted on the Nature Center’s website at http://www.gumbolimbo.org/Scholarship. Applications are due February 18, 2012.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is proud to announce the winners of our logo contest, held in early 2011! We received dozens of entries. In all, there were four elements that were consistently represented: the ocean, trees, butterflies, and turtles. Each entry had anywhere from one to four of these elements in their design, each portrayed differently. Although we were unable to decide on one design submission, we were able to use different elements from three different entries to piece together a final design.

Turtle: The Incredible Journey is the critically-praised, award-winning film from director Nick Stringer ("National Geographic Explorer") that has enchanted and enthralled audiences worldwide. This is a spectacular adventure of one loggerhead turtle's journey from a young hatchling emerging from her nest in the sand, to a 25 year old adult returning to the same beach to hatch her own young. It's a remarkable story about a harrowing trek around the globe of this threatened species and an amazing odyssey you won't want to miss! Originally called the Turtle Song, Turtle: the Incredible Journey was filmed, in part at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in 2007/2008. FeeBee, one of Gumbo Limbo's former residents, was used in the filming. FeeBee hatched from a nest in Spanish River Park in 2008. She was part of Florida Atlantic University's (FAU) research program to determine the gender of hatchling sea turtles (that is how we know FeeBee is a girl).

Date: May 6, 2011
Hello! I know many of you have been patiently waiting for our sea tanks to be replaced. I am happy to say that we are finally beginning this project! The project went out to bid in January and Brang Construction was selected. The Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District originally set aside $1 million for this project. Because such favorable bids were received, the District unanimously voted to approve an additional $1 million to complete the entire project rather than phasing it over a few years. What IS the Tank Project? We will have four new saltwater tanks: a pair of shallow tanks and a pair of deep tanks. The tanks will feature side viewing windows and have a hard roof with fans and lights. In addition, the deep tanks will feature a second story viewing gallery. At the March Pre-Demolition and Mobilization Meeting, we learned that demolition will begin May 9. The schedule for the project is 275 days from start to finish, barring any unforeseen delays.
